Cockapoos - Health and Care

Breeders and owners of Cockapoos should learn much about the health problems that the breed is prone to. The Cockapoo is recommended for people who suffer from allergies. Unlike the American Cocker Spaniel, the breed does not suffer as much from skin problems. However, Cockapoos can develop skin allergies. An allergic dog will scratch and be anxious. It is important to notice the disease in due time and contact a veterinarian for advice. Yet, before a veterinarian provides information on treatment, watch the dog closely. The task is to determine what causes the allergy. Allergy can result from food, wool, and other substances.

The Cockapoo needs much grooming. The breed does shed. Shedding is usually managed by the means of regular brushing. It is good if brushing is done every day. However, Cockapoos will do OK with a few grooming sessions a week. As far as washing is concerned, be careful not to overdo it. It is recommended to wash a dog no more than once in two weeks. Excessive washing will reduce the natural oils that protect the dog's skin.

Vaccinations should be done to a dog starting from an early age. It is essential to give a Cockapoo shots for parvovirus, rabies, and other diseases that may be lethal. Also, make sure to choose a good treatment for fleas. Fleas make the dog uncomfortable. Continuous scratching and biting irritates the skin and is very annoying to the dog. It is also important that Cockapoos have as little contact with strayed animals that most likely suffer from external parasites.
